I'm realizing how much I've mentioned God in the last few posts. Speaking of, due to religious reasons, Matisyahu took the stage as soon as possible after midnight Saturday night. It was quite a site to see him stand on the Wobble Factory's speakers rapping to a crowd of young boys singing every lyric. Legend Killah Priest joined him as Matisyahu beat-boxed to a delighted crowd.

It's the end of a two-night run, and Techno-Tribal's 10-year anniversary. If epic proportions is what we promised, I can say we got them, from the stage decor, to the dancers, to the aerial displays, to the performers giving each song everything they've got. I literally did not see one performer give a half-ass performance tonight. Not one. All were great. All were on fire. Tonight was/is/gonna still be, incredible.

A pretty NICE sound was attached to Kitaro's digital drum tonight. Sounds like hammering on metal, but movie-like, mystical...and over dubstep, with fire. If he is summoning in the Gods, they saw a dark night with bright fire and angel wings made of white feathers by live performers, Lumisque. A contrast only combined gracefully at Techno-Tribal Community Dance 2009. Ahhhh, more to come.

I have closet aerialist envy, I'll admit, the strength and flexibility it takes to be so amazing up in the air either comes from an early start of gymnastics at 6 years old, or a gift from God...Tonight TT Robson blew my mind up on the satin ropes. Also Gaudi came hot straight out of the gates, accompanied by Liquid Fire Mantra who twirled fire in front of the audience as well as amongst each other to the point of worry and fascination.

Saturday night is the night to pull out all of the stops...and we are.

Don't tell the wife, but I was secretly plotting the whole time: Oh, you want to honeymoon in Paris? Why not?

Surprise: K'naan is playing while we're in Paris? Why not?

Sing: Screamin' Jay Hawkin's version of "I Love Paris" in the shower, in the car, on the plane.

Actually, I had no idea the Somalian rapper would be crack a lackin' through the City of Light. So imagine my bright eyes when I picked up Pariscope and saw the listing - K'naan at the Alhambra (quite possibly the same joint where Duke recorded "Duke Ellington at the Alhambra" in 1958).

Man, what a freaking amazing show. With maybe 200 adoring (mostly white) fans sitting in his lap, K'naan tore through "T.I.A" (peppered with a sample of Bob Marley's "Simmer Down"), invited French rapper Oxmo Puccino on stage for a spell and reigned in Paris time for a stirring trip through "Fatima," the childhood remembrance of a girlfriend who disappeared one day.

But the highlight had to be the original version of "Somalia" - the one he played for his family before recording a kinder, gentler version for the new album "Troubadour" (released in February, landing at #32 on Billboard charts).

"It was haunting and maybe a little too much to put on the album," he told the crowd.

Stripped down and acoustic on stage, the original poem to his homeland underscores a few lines you won't hear on "Troubadour": "Somalia...they say since you know how to kill, you should learn to die...."

Before he plays two shows this weekend at Harmony Festival (11 p.m. Friday @ Techno-Tribal and 5:45 p.m. @ Saturday on the main stage), here's a quick tease:

Kitaro's Magical Set Mixed With Dubstep

In ancient Greece and Rome people did not believe that creativity came from the person creating, rather they believed that creativity was a divine attendant spirit that came to and through human beings from some unknowable source. The Greeks called this unknowable source "daemons". The Romans called the creative spirit a "genius", but not in the sense that we define the word genius now, rather a spirit speaking to them from afar. American poet Ruth Stone speaks of her poetry like a roll of thunder coming at her over the landscape that she needs to hurry up and catch. Kitaro says about his musical experience:

"I never had education in music, I just learned to trust my ears and my feelings." He credits ‘powers beyond himself’ for his music, saying, "This music is not from my mind. It is from heaven, going through my body and out my fingers through composing. Sometimes I wonder. I never practice. I don't read or write music, but my fingers move. I wonder, 'Whose song is this?' I write my songs, but they are not my songs."

Kitaro's performance is sure to be a magical moment at Techno-Trial 2009.

Grammy winning Kitaro, will be playing while Mystic Beat Lounge's resident circus oley meets Burning Man sort of troupe, Luminesque, twirls, ropes, and ribbons above your head, and spins fire in front of your face.

Kitaro, our crowning act Saturday night is a local Northern California man who composes songs meant for movies, is an original fan of the synthesizer, and a pioneer of electronic music. He has sold more albums than any other artist at Harmony Festival, and writes songs that embody passion and the dramatic. Besides creating and playing music of a magical gnome forest sort of nature with God-sent mystical sound, for the first time ever while he plays, Kitaro's music will be mixed to dubstep.

The record may have just scratched to a stop in your mind as it did in mine when I heard this bit of information. Kitaro and dubstep? How does such a thing pan out? Expect him to run wildly across the stage playing all sorts of the instruments he plays so well.

Then under the synthesizer, the fervently pounding drums, and the sweet tones of movie soundtrack "Heaven and Earth"…dirty dubstep.

MATISYAHU!!!!!

One thing I love about this year's Techno-Tribal line-up is that many of our performers are not only awesome musicians, but they also have intriguing backgrounds as people, too. Matisyahu is no exception.

Matisyahu is a reggae artist, rapper, and sometimes beat-boxer extraordinaire. He will take the stage at Techno-Tribal this year shortly after midnight Saturday night. Why after midnight you might wonder? Matisyahu is a devout Hasidic Jew and therefore unable to perform Friday night through Saturday in observation of the Jewish Sabbath. Hasidic Judaism is a fascinating and complex religion; I suggest looking into the religion's philosophies further if it is unfamiliar to you. It is also one of the key aspects that sets Matisyahu apart in the reggae scene. It will be a pleasure to have such a unique musical figure on our Techno-Tribal stage in the wee hours of the morning.

Matisyahu's religion, race, style and music have all caused media interest and sometimes media frenzy as he has grown more and more popular. But Matisyahu steadily continues on the path he is on both spiritually and musically, also gaining him a lot of respect from many.

Born Mathew Miller , Matisyahu in speech sounds like a man from New York. However when you hear him sing he carries a Jamaican dialect. Matisyahu attributes this to his listening to Bob Marley growing up and being inspired by the music he was hearing; so much so that when Matisyahu started singing it was a natural dialect for him to mimic in his music.

Other attention Matisyahu gets is for his awesome beat-boxing, which he attributes to growing up listening to 90s hip hop. Check out these great interviews to get a deeper perspective on Matisyahu as a person and his music.

K'naan - Flyin' High on Life

These are words by Somalian born hip hop artist, K'naan (his name meaning traveler in the Somali language); K'naan will be performing at Techno-Tribal Friday night, June 12th, 2009. K'naan is of MTV fame these days having toured with the likes of the Marley brothers following the release of Welcome To Jamrock in 2005. Damian Marley says that they are "players of the same team in terms of (their) mission in life, in terms of schooling people to what is really going on globally, and going on in all countries, and all culture." It's the truth in this statement that makes K'naan of even higher importance to us and hip hop music in general.

K'naan's history as a human being born into what would soon become a war torn Somalia seems the biggest influence on his lyrics and musical message. He spent most of his childhood in the Wardhiigleey district, coined "The Lake of Blood". His mother petitioned the United States embassy for an exit visa as the situation in Somalia was worsening. On the last day the US embassy remained open, K'naan and his mother received their exit visa, boarding the last commercial flight out of the country.

Upon arrival to the United States, K'naan spoke no English. He began to teach himself English through rap diction, mimicking the hip hop style phonetically. K'naan says that language has been an influential part of his development, and his lyrics reflect his awareness of how powerful language is "as a communication tool, and language as a cultural carrier." It's interesting to note that K'naan is sober, having never even smoked pot or drank a sip of alcohol in his life. Obviously comfortable with himself, his persona, and his state of being, K'naan speaks of sobriety saying, "People can't believe it of me when they see photos or interviews, they say 'Man he is on…he is flying,' I am, but on life. I have a certain appreciation for life that just keeps me feeling like there is a liquid measure of happiness that I have. I can't say that I'm not depressed sometimes; I just don't do anything outside of music that will make me feel better about my life. I just do music, and that makes me feel really good."

K'naan's latest album titled, Troubadour, was released February 2009. We are overwhelmingly excited for K'naan to be with us at Techno-Tribal Friday night.

What started as a dream to combine a variety of cultures into one project has now manifested into what is Balkan Beat Box. BBB is Tamir Muskat and Ori Kaplan, two Israeli-born, seasoned NYC musicians and DJs already a part of the many other underground bands on the scene. They are joined by musicians and composers Itamar Ziegler, Dana Leong, Tomer Yosef, Ben Handler, Eyal Talmudi, Peter Hess, Uri Kinrot, and Jeremiah Lockwood. Together they become a high-energy block party.

Balkan Beat Box is all-inclusive world music. They credit their sound to being from Israel and growing up in the Middle East, as well as years of touring in New York. They are Balkan gypsy funk mixed with Middle Eastern rhythm; they combine sounds of the Mediterranean with sounds of Bulgaria, Turkey, Israel and others; they use the power of their vocals, guitars, drums, electronics, turntables, horns and even a clarinet. They put "World" into World Music.

Mystic Beat Lounge Celebrates the 10-Year Anniversary of Techno-Tribal Dance - June 12th & 13th, 2009

Santa Rosa, CA - May 26, 2009 - Mystic Beat Lounge (www.mysticbeatlounge.com) is excited to announce the 10-year anniversary of its legendary Techno-Tribal Dance (http://techno-tribal.com/) June 12th & 13th. Techno-Tribal Dance, which is Harmony Festival’s After Dark music and art extravaganza, is one of the largest independently produced events in the Bay Area. What originally started in 1999 with a few good party loving people has today grown into a full-scale production run by a collective of seasoned DJ’s, artists, visionaries and producers known as the Mystic Beat Lounge. This year Techno-Tribal is adding many firsts to its show and pulling out all the stops to make this the most elaborate fusion of the underground arts, combining dance music, lighting, performance, fire, acrobatics, juggling, aerialists, and performance painters into one spectacular community gathering for two unforgettable nights.

The weekend celebration will host Balkan Beat Box’s sounds of the Gypsy Diaspora, the bass-driven tribal grooves of Medicine Drum (with guests Wisdom), plus Somalia-born hip hop artist K’Naan whose stylings merge conscious American hip hop with brilliant protest poetry. Acclaimed composer and musician, Kitaro, will perform for the midnight celebration while his music is mixed for the first time to an anthemic dubstep soundtrack and visually accented by the dazzling fire feast of Luminesque. Also included in the line-up is multi-genre trance inductions of DJ/Producer Shpongle featuring a very special guest appearance by Reggae artist Matisyahu, U.K. chillout pioneers The Orb, the dub-reggae driven house and breaks of U.K. producer/performer/DJ Gaudi in his first ever West Coast festival appearance. Bay Area Hip Hop & Freestyling artist Abai will grace the stage, as well as NANDA, an innovative and comedic juggling act. When it's time to relax, the Chill Lounge with live performance painters, cameo stage performances, visual arts, massage therapists and an elaborately decorated temple awaits partygoers.
